That is not the actual name of this chandelier, it’s actually the Ether Crystal chandelier and no it is not cheap, it’s between 7,000 and 12,000 on shopzilla.com, but it is very nice to look at and it is the same chandelier that is featured on Dirty Sexy Money, so if you love that show this may be a great splurge for you. I love this chandelier and plan on useing it in a project I have this term.
When it comes to home renovations, there’s a lot to think about. You could re-do your floors, ceilings, walls, cabinetry, bathroom fixtures - the list seems endless! Lighting is another big renovation project you should probably consider.Lighting is essential for two reasons - the obvious one being that it’s functional, filling a room with light. Additionally the right lighting can set a mood and create ambience. Recessed lighting is an excellent option if you are trying to create a contemporary, modern feel for your space. Recessed lighting takes the focus off the light fixtures and put it’s on the room itself, highlighting either beautiful wall art, or newly stained hardwood floors. When renovating a room that gets a lot of used, like a family room or den, recessed lighting is an excellent choice.
Used both as task lighting and directional lighting, recessed fixtures have the ability to completely transform a room. Your family room is likely going to be used for different activities including reading, playing board games, eating, watching television, and entertaining guests. Given the variety of activities going on this room, a dimmer switch is a must have. A dimmer switch makes the room even more versatile, giving you the power to adjust the intensity of the light at any given moment.
Additionally, the addition of recessed lights really highlight the quality workmanship that you’ve had done to your space. Hardwood floors and freshly painted walls look infinitely better and brighter under the beams of some strategically placed recessed lights. Lighting an entire space with recessed lighting is a bad idea however, as it will bring a real harsh and unflattering light quality to the room. Having additional light coming from an eye level is important, for instance floor lamps, sconces, and table lamps all help to even out the brightness and glare coming from the recessed fixtures. Another thing to keep in mind when lighting your family room is not to light a task area like a table or in front of a mirror from above where you plan on sitting or standing. You want the light to hit in front of the person, which will help avoid unnatural shadows and be generally more flattering.
By adding the recessed lighting to your family room, you help make the space comfortable and relaxing - two essential qualities for any family room.
If you are getting tired of your home and it’s very bad lighting design I have an idea for you. In these rough economic times you now have things available to you that you once did not, such as high end homes and their lighting. If you are stuck as to what do do with your home check out these homes when there is an open house. Look at how they have their lighting done and see if it will work in your home. Sometimes seeing something in real life is much different then seeing it in a magazine or a picture.
I would suggest that you try to look at homes that are similar to yours or look at homes that are the exact opposite, but something you like. Remember when you do this though that not everything you want will be able to work in your home. Some homes have really high ceilings that support a large chandelier, your home may not. So what are you waiting for? Go check out those homes.
Lighting can be dramatic, simple or set a mood, but sometimes it can also just be a lot of fun and great to look at. I have gathered a collection of some really funky and stylish lamps that may just inspire you to take a look at your home design. Sometimes it’s amazing what you can come up with. I think my favorite one is the on bedrock lamp, it looks like a light on pillows!
Reading the news today I saw I very interesting article on yahoo about Wireless Electricity and thought this could be amazing. Not only would it work will with laptops and other now battery powered devices, but think of the interior design possibilities! You could put a lamp wherever you wanted to. No more cords to trip over or big holes in the walls. You could just stick up a light and call it good.
Not only will Wireless Electricity help with lighting but, your kitchen layout would no longer be limited to where the closest plug is. You could actually move your appliances to where they work well for you. You also wouldn’t have to worry about cords there either. Offices will change a ton as nothing will have to have cords and you can also put equipment where you need it, making it more accessible to the worker. This is great for the home office as you can have all of your Printers and so on in one are without worrying about overloading a circuit.
Personally I love the idea of getting rid of batteries and that my laptop will never die because the battery is too low. Of course this is way in the future, they are saying around 2050, but who knows we may get lucky and it will be sooner and able to go into homes, right now they are mostly looking at commercial use. I am very excited about this idea, Wireless Electricity really could change the world.
Lighting is a very important part of increasing the value of your home, it’s usually a cheap fix and works very well. With winter coming to most of us soon many people are getting ready for the cold dark nights that will be coming. Right now I would recommend concentrating on outdoor lighting before worrying about indoor lighting. You want to make sure you have enough light so that you can preform task, get to your home safely and of course help others get their too. Outdoor Lighting Fixtures are not that expensive and they really can help with safety. Here in the US one thing that we do in the fall is Halloween. Kids walk around asking for candy. You want a well lit outdoor area in order to keep those kids safe as well. Outdoor lighting also helps with curb appeal and may up the value of your home.
Once you have outdoor lighting done and ready to go then I would start with indoor lighting. If you have an entry with just a plan light, think about getting one or two Chandeliers for that space, depending on the size. When people see a chandelier they think money, and luxury. Having one in the entry way will also impress guest and potential home buyers.
The last place you want to look at for lighting is the bathroom, Vanity Lighting is another great way to impress guest and home buyers. Having good lighting in the bathroom can make it seem bigger and more inviting. Yes that is important since bathrooms and kitchens now sell homes.
Next fall I will be taking a lighting class, at least I hope to be there are a few complications I have to get though first. I am though, looking forward to this class. Lighting is so much more then just having a light in the room so you can see. Lighting can make things pop out at you, it can set the mood by making it brighter or darker in a room and it can keep you safe.
There are many types of lighting you can buy. I recommend going green and buying compact florescent lighting or LED lights. LED’s take some getting use to as their light tends to have more of a blue tint then other types of lighting, but they last forever. Think of a child’s toy that has the small lights on it. Those lights hardly ever die and that is because most of them are LED’s. Both compact florescent and LED’s are great for the environment and your pocketbook. Yes they may cost more in the long run, but with energy prices going up they will really help save you money in the long run.
If your looking to switch but are not sure where to start here are a few tips.
1. change all of your night lights to LED lights. I got 2 LED bulbs for around $2 at walmart. Shop around though you may find a better deal
2. Figure out which lights you use most during the day and evening. Switch those first.
3. If you can replace all of you bulbs at once, if not do one room at a time.
4. Don’t forget about your outdoor lights
5. Buy all new holiday decorations made with LED’s. Sometimes trying things that are not permanent can help you see what you would get out of switching everything. Christmas lights are a great way to do this.
