Live healthy get a plant

Posted By: Holly  //  Category: General, Indoor Plants

I have a great tip to help you live longer and love your home more, get a plant. Not a fake plant that is not going to do anything but sit there and collect dust, but a real live plant. Why? Well plants not only help add to the design and decor of your home, but they have many health benefits, they create fresh clean oxygen for your home so when it’s all closed up you still get good clean air.

They can also help to make a teen more responsible without having to get them an animal. A classmate of mine pointed this out to me. Her mom got her a plant before letter her get a kitten, she took very good care of the plant so she was able to get her kitten. Her sister on the other hand did not take good care of her plant and was not able to get the car she wanted until she was 18.

Back to home and health benefits. Having a plant in your home makes you feel better, you will work better be less stressed and feel more comfortable in your home. There are many reasons for this but the big one is that we like the outdoors, even if we don’t think we do. We like plants just not bugs, trust me it’s true.

Fitness in The Home

Posted By: Holly  //  Category: Design tips, General, Interior Design

Not everyone can afford a gym membership but some people can offered to get good exercises equipment for at home use. treadmills are a big seller for home gyms and so are weight benches but you need to think about what space you have before you buy any type of exercise equipment.

If you have a huge basement and a lot of room you are able to go crazy and get the big machines that do everything you could ever think of, but if you don’t you need to really think about the space you have. Space saving technology is a great thing, but sometimes it doesn’t save much space. Recently I saw an ad for a stair climber that is said to be space saving, but it still took up about 3-4 feet of room when closed. Yes it did save space, but not that much. When designing a workout area you have to think of these things. If it’s a small room you have to think of space more. I have a space saving treadmill that I love, it’s folds up well, but still takes about 2 feet of space. That I can live with. If I got a weight bench when I was in my apartment I would have had to get one that folds up. So that really left out a lot of equipment that I could use.

So next time your out buying that fitness equipment think about the space you have, how you will actually use it and if the equipment will fit and work with your lifestyle.

Destress after a long day

Posted By: Holly  //  Category: General, stuff

For many do it yourselfers a good work day means a long tireing, stressful day. I have had a hard week so I decided to let all of my readers know aboutYoga DVD this cool yoga dvd I got. It’s from Real body work and is a great way to relax after a long day. If your new to yoga this is a great DVD for you, the poses are explaned an a seprate area from the routine so you don’t have to try to follow the routean and learn what the pose does. I have done some yoga before and I learned something new with this yoga dvd.

Yoga is a great destresser and can help you do your home improvement jobs better and faster. How well you can do yoga to relax as I have done this week or you can do yoga in the morning and use it to energize your body. It also makes you more flexable and helps with joints. That means you can reach all of those corners better and faster then you could before. Just think a cure for the little things, yoga.

Update and help needed

Posted By: Holly  //  Category: General

As many of you know I am a student and I live at home. I wrote a few days ago about my mom and how I was going to implement some feng shui to help her heal. We have more information on her and it’s now worse then it was before. I’m going to be doing some more research into fung shui and other Eastern methods of design to find some sort of help.

Right now I am offering advertising on 3 of my blogs two are $1, those are Everything and anything and Makin the money. The other blog, my diabetes blog is $3, as it’s going for both my moms bills and my hospital bills. I know this has nothing to do with design, but I wanted to let those of you who do not read my other blogs know about it.

I may do something on here too, but I’m not sure yet. If you don’t have money to donate then donate your time by reading this blog and subscribing to my RSS feed. It will help with the paid blogging I do and in turn help with my bills.

Thank you all for reading this blog I enjoy writing it and hope to have more fun design tips for you soon.

Catching up

Posted By: Holly  //  Category: General

I had a post that I was suppose to make last week about the Postie blog carnival but I forgot to put it on this blog. If you don’t know what blog carnival is it is pretty much a way to get the word out about your blog. You blog about certain topics or events and one person host the carnival. (they display the links on their blog)

This months Postie carnival was our best post of 2007. I choose my post on the Resolute Desk. I also participated in this carnival on my other blog and choose my post on Habitat for humanity.

Why is a carnival important for a blogger to participate in? Well it’s just like networking for a job or career advancement. In a designers case it could bring you more clients. In my case it has brought me more readers. Remember networking will get you everywhere.

A search for modern design

Posted By: Holly  //  Category: General, stuff

I love modern design, but I don’t think I would live in a modern home. That said a modern vacation home would work well for me. This is the same case with a women that I met the other day. We were waiting in line at the food court in a hospital nearby, she was there for the birth of her granddaughter and I was there for my sisters surgery.

We started talking and she asked what I did for a living. My first response right now is always that I am a student and I’m going for interior design. The second I said this she furniture houstonstarted asking me all these questions. Apparently she had just bought a vacation home that was a modern design and had no clue what to do with it. I’m willing to give out tips right now, since I can’t hand over a card and say come in to my studio and we’ll see what we can do. I did hand her the card for this blog though!

There are many great ways to find furniture that will fit into your homes theme sometimes searching modern furniture is not the way to find furniture you can actually buy. Try searching for furniture stores in your area instead. Like furniture stores in Houston or furniture in Detroit. Most stores sell different types of furniture. So they may not com up in a modern furniture search.

If your going into the field of interior design remember you will always get questions from people. You have to make sure though that you answer them with just enough information to make them happy, and bring them back to you for a job. You don’t want to offer to do anything for free. Since many people will expect you to do it again.

An important tool

Posted By: Holly  //  Category: General

Designers don’t always get to sit there and order people around. Sometimes they actually have to do real work. Yesterday I was talking to a women online who has been a designer for 30 years. She said she carries around a safety utility knife and a hammer. She doesn’t go anywhere without them.

Why? Well you never know what will come up and usually it will be one of these two items you will need to fix it. Okay so her utility knife has a screwdriver and a few other gadgets, but you will probably need those too.

I learned a few things from this wonderfully interesting women. I may share more with you later, check back and see.
