Starting An Interior Design Business

Author: Holly  |  Category: Business

I have been thinking more and more about starting my own interior design business, but I will be waiting until after the Christmas season as I don’t believe that anyone will have cash to do much. I may offer some decorating services, but even then I think it will be hard. Because I know it’s going to be hard to get going I have been looking into internet marketing to use for a design business. If your into interior design and want to start a business, but are not big on all the internet stuff I would recommend you check out networksolutions.com. They offer many great services to get your new design business and your name out there so that you can not only do well, but become a known expert in the design field. They do this by offering help with pay per click and email advertising.

I think anyone who is going into the interior design field, or any field for that matter should really think about getting a website and getting their name out there, even if the website is just a portfolio that showcases your work, you would really be amazed what that may do for you. I will be setting one up soon and will of course post about it here so that you can check out my school projects.

There are so many things you need to do to start an interior design business, and if you don’t think people will spend money until after the holidays, then setting your business up now is a great strategy.

Marketing on the internet is a tool, and if you are just getting started, it depends on how you use it.

We just announced our Interior Design Summit, and if you want to learn from people who are very experienced so you don’t have to learn the hard way, it could save you thousands of dollars. http://www.InteriorDesignSummit.com.

This is not meant to be self-serving, but I’ve spent over 20 years in the business and all of our 13 speakers have at least 10 years in their respective businesses. One of them owns the third largest design firm in the US and she thinks it is the perfect time to start an interior design firm!

Normally I would agree with this person as it is a great time to start a design firm, but I live in an area where no one has money, Michigan is in a recession and has been for a while. I have tried getting work from the people around me, but no luck. Right now they are worried about heating cost and don’t want to hear about design services, though they have followed some advice I gave about heating.

The link you gave is great and I will be checking it out, I don’t think I can go this time as I have classes, but maybe if another one is done over the summer I can check it out.

I’m not sure the economic climate should put you off starting your interior design business. There may be another way of looking at this. When times are tough people often need something to cheer themselves up, and what better way than to give there home a make-over. Also people who were thinking of moving home, may have now decided to stay put and and give an exciting face-lift to what they already have. You may be just the person to help them :)

You make a great point. The biggest problem I have is that interior design is not like HGTV it’s a lot of work and many people don’t have the money to pay for the items up front to put in their home. I’m looking into it and putting an ad in the paper for my services for holiday decorating. I think that would be the way to start.

I can only imagine how difficult things are in Michigan especially with the auto industry being hit so badly.

Yes, these are tough times and some areas are hit worse than others.

There are still some people with money and although many will be very careful with their expenditures until after the election, the good thing is, as people start cutting their spending, they will spend more time at home.

This will lead to “freshening” their homes with paint which can be cost-effective and make a big impact for low dollars. What about doing paint consultations for a reasonable price? Just a thought.

I love that idea! That I think would help me make some extra cash.

Good luck with that…and maybe even think of offering a service such as “freshening up” by rearranging furniture, art and accessories…you could charge by the room and it wouldn’t have to be terribly expensive.

Take care and let us know how it goes.
